Garage Flooring- Endless Options

Updated: Jul 15

Garage flooring is an area that gets growing attention. People start to realize that the garage is an essential part of the house-the gate to their house and while it is usually very neglected, dirty and messy ,garage flooring can resolve some of the problem.

There are 2 main options when it comes to garage flooring ( other than the obvious bare concrete):

  1. Coating- this option includes epoxy and polyaspartic coatings. There are many different products in this field with the same principle- providing durable layer of coating that wont allow the concrete to absorb the dirt ( tire marks, oils and chemicals etc..) common in garages. The main advantages of the coatings are :

  • Durability - when installed properly with good surface preparation and good product.

  • Looks- The coating colors and flakes can be customized to preference and provide sleek look.

  • Easy to clean- Oils and fluids typically wont be absorbed and thus can be wiped with a towel relatively easily.

The main disadvantages are :

  • VOC (Volatile organic compounds) and chemical smell- the gases emitted from some of the coatings can be harmful.

  • Durability- while it was mentioned as advantage, the durability of a coating can be disadvantage and can be compromised by various factors like bad surface preparation, bad application, low quality product, UV and temperature changes (on some of the coatings).

  • Slippery- When its wet it can be very slippery.

  • Removal- Not easy to remove- requires specialty tools and labor.

2. Tile Flooring- This option includes interlocking rubber tiles, vinyl tiles with adhesive and modular tiles (like Swisstrax). The main advantages of the tile flooring:

  • Durability *very dependent on the product quality. Cheaper low quality product will crack and break under UV exposure and under repetitive load.

  • Endless design options- when it come to modular tiles , the design and customization options are endless.

  • Easy to clean.

  • Easier to remove.

  • Non slippery- some of the tiles have non slippery design.

The disadvantages of the tile flooring are:

  • Durability- The cheaper, lower quality tiles won't be durable as expected in a garage environment.

  • Endless design options- while can be great to some, can overwhelm others.

  • Maintenance- Some of tile options need constant maintenance to keep it clean.

Garage Dream Works sells and installs Swisstrax premium modular tile flooring and here is why:

  • Simply the best product in the industry- Swisstrax premium tile flooring is high quality product with limited lifetime warranty. It is proudly made in USA and incorporates technological advantages like UV , chemicals and solvents resistance, no toxic or hazardous materials, naturally slip resistant when wet.

  • Superior strength- with up to 3,120 PSI compressive strength and up to 70,000 lbs of rollover weight you are covered (unless you park a tank).

  • Huge customization options- with 18 different colors you can customize your garage floor exactly how you want it. Don't worry, If you are overwhelmed we will help you...

  • Premium looks, premium feel, premium quality- with 3/4" thick tiles and 15.75X15.75 (unlike cheaper products), the advanced interlocking system, you will feel the difference when you look and when you walk.

  • Easy to clean and looks always clean- the Swisstrax Ribtrax pro channels allow dust and dirt fall in between the ribs and preserve the clean looks. Cleaning? no problem: you can use a shop vac to vaccum the dirt between the ribs or use a water hose and the innovative channeling will allow the water to flow between the tiles or just lift the tiles and clean underneath.

  • Moving? you can move it with you. Unlike garage floor coatings or tiles that use adhesive, Swisstrax modular tile flooring can be removed and relocated.

In conclusion, when it comes to garage flooring today - you have the options. Whether its coating or tile flooring - research and pick the right one for you but keep in mind that the saying "you get what you pay for" can not be more accurate in this case. There is a huge difference in the quality of the products and the installers in the market and often when you pay cheap you pay twice.
